Nash Motors was founded in 1917 by Charles Nash, formerly of General Motors. The company produced cars under its own name until 1938 then as Nash-Kelvinator until 1954. The company value was to "Give the customer more than he has paid for."
It didn’t take long for the company to released their first car, the Nash Model 671. Around the same time, the Jeffrey Quad was produced. This was an early hit for the company, with over 11,000 of them being sold between 1917 and 1919. They also served in World War One.
In 1924 Nash bought LaFayette Motors and converted the factory to produce Nash model cars. LaFayette would briefly reappear as a budget Nash between 1937 and 1940, but would be replaced once more in 1941 by Nash.
The Nash Ajax was the next notable car released by the company. It saw production in 1925 and was an exceptional entry-level car. The car was renamed the Nash Light Six in 1926 and existing owners were provided with a conversion kit to match the new model.
The year 1934 saw the introduction of the Nash LaFayette, the product of absorbing the manufacturer earlier in 1924. This was a low cost car designed to offer a lot for little. This was replaced by the Nash 600 in 1941.
Nash merged with Kelvinator in 1937 to form Nash-Kelvinator and Charles Nash retired soon after. The company continued making cars, including an innovative “bed-in-a-car.” This was a standard car whose interior could be converted into sleeping quarters.
The Ambassador saloon was introduced in 1945, the Suburban in 1946, the Airflyte in 1949 and other models up until 1954. It also included a Nash-Healey, in conjunction with British manufacturer Healey.
In 1954, Nash bought the Hudson Motor Company and formed the American Motors Corporation, or AMC. While some Nash models were sold after this point, it was the AMC brand that was carried from this time.
